Making Summer Meals Easier at Lazy Dog Restaurants

Where Family Dining Finally Feels Effortless

By Jody Robinson

There’s something about summer break that sounds idyllic – until about day three, when the kitchen is suddenly open 24/7 and everyone is hungry all the time. As a mom, I love having my kids home, but the constant cycle of planning, prepping, and cleaning up meals can turn even the most enthusiastic home cook into someone scanning the calendar for a night off.

That’s where dining out becomes less of a luxury and more of a sanity-saver. But not all restaurants are created equal when you’re bringing the whole family along. It has to be easy. Comfortable. Flexible. And ideally, it should feel like a place where kids are not just tolerated – but genuinely welcomed.

From the time the kids were littles, Lazy Dog has been one of those rare go-to spots that consistently gets it right. It strikes that perfect balance between elevated and approachable, where parents can enjoy a great meal while still feeling completely at ease bringing the kids – and even the dog. Their outdoor patio, especially in the summer months, has become our sweet spot. It’s relaxed, dog-friendly, and more forgiving of kid energy, making the experience a treat.

What I appreciate most is how thoughtfully they’ve leaned into the family dining experience. The refreshed kids’ menu is a perfect example. It goes beyond the expected with options that feel approachable and balanced. The new customizable Kid’s Grilled Chicken Bowl has quickly become a favorite at our table. It’s simple enough for younger kids, with rice and edamame, and the teriyaki served on the side – because every parent knows sauces can be a dealbreaker. At the same time, the option to upgrade to steak or salmon makes it feel a little more grown-up for older kids who are ready to branch out. And while the kids are happy, parents still get to enjoy handcrafted meals and drinks too.

And then there are the details that every mom appreciates. The interactive menu elements – dog ears, sticker sheets – may seem small, but they create just enough engagement to keep little hands busy and conversations flowing. It turns dinner into something shared, not something rushed. On Wednesdays, complimentary Build-Your-Own Sundaes for kids make dinner out feel even more special.

Of course, even with the best intentions, there are nights when leaving the house feels like one step too far. Summer has a way of filling up quickly, and sometimes staying in is the win. Having an option like their TV Dinners – something comforting, well-made, and easy to bring home – adds another layer of flexibility that fits right into real family life.

At the end of the day, dining out with kids will never be completely seamless – and that’s part of the charm. But when a restaurant makes the effort to understand what families actually need, it changes the experience entirely. It becomes less about managing the moment and more about enjoying it.

And in the middle of a busy, slightly chaotic summer, having a place that works for the whole family is exactly what we’re all looking for.
