Finding Peace of Mind Through Planning

By Sherre Cook, Prearrangement Advisor, Anubis Cremations

Talking about end-of-life planning isn’t something most people look forward to, but after more than 13 years helping families navigate these decisions, I’ve learned that planning ahead is one of the greatest gifts we can leave our loved ones.

When someone passes away without a plan, family members are often faced with making important decisions while grieving. Preplanning removes much of that uncertainty by documenting personal wishes in advance, allowing families to focus on supporting one another instead of wondering what their loved one would have wanted.

Understanding Today’s Cremation Options

Many people don’t realize how much the funeral profession has evolved. Cremation has become an increasingly popular choice, and families today have more options than ever before to personalize arrangements while reflecting their values.

In addition to low-emission traditional cremation, newer technologies have introduced water-based cremation, also known as alkaline hydrolysis. This process uses water, gentle heat, and naturally occurring alkaline compounds to accelerate the natural process of returning the body to its elemental form. It produces significantly fewer emissions than flame-based cremation, making it an appealing choice for individuals seeking a more environmentally conscious option.

At Anubis Cremations, families can choose between both methods, allowing them to select the option that best aligns with their personal beliefs, environmental values, and final wishes. As awareness of sustainability continues to grow, many people appreciate having meaningful choices that reflect both compassion and environmental stewardship.

Preplanning also provides an opportunity to personalize arrangements. Whether someone prefers a simple cremation, a memorial service, or a celebration of life, documenting those preferences in advance helps ensure their wishes are honored. It also gives families confidence that they’re carrying out those wishes during an emotional time.

Planning Is a Gift to Those You Love

Another advantage of preplanning is financial preparedness. Making arrangements ahead of time allows families to better understand costs, explore available options, and reduce the financial stress that often accompanies an unexpected loss.

One misconception I hear frequently is that preplanning is only for older adults. In reality, it’s an important part of responsible life planning at any age—much like creating a will or advance healthcare directive. None of us knows what the future holds, but we can make thoughtful decisions today that will ease the burden on those we love tomorrow.

The most rewarding part of my work is helping people realize these conversations don’t have to be uncomfortable. They can be empowering. Planning ahead provides peace of mind, knowing your wishes will be honored and your family won’t have to make difficult decisions alone.

While no plan can lessen the grief of losing someone we love, thoughtful preparation can make one of life’s most challenging moments a little easier, giving families the freedom to focus on what matters most: remembering, healing, and celebrating a life well lived.
