Surf and Turf

5,000 sq. ft. of Fun at Bark City in Surf City, U.S.A.

“They have couches.” “Babe- they have couches for the dogs to sleep on!” I left my laptop open the other day to Bark City’s homepage. My husband used it for a minute to Google something and was grabbed by the photo of happy dogs lounging on fluffy, comfy couches. Not something you’d see normally at a doggy daycare.

But Bark City’s founder Bryson Berryman is looking to change the game. No more tired kennel-lined daycare facilities. Instead, Bryson would like to let your four-legged friend hang out in his 5,000 square foot yard – complete with splash pool.

Bark City got its start long before the turf was installed, however, when six years ago, Bryson found his way to the Humane Society in Orange County. He adopted Reggie, and soon found that as a new pet owner, he needed a place for Reggie to sprawl out when he had to take an appointment or travel for work.

“I started taking classes in dog behavior, visiting dog parks, working with shelters, and talking to dog experts,” he says. “I realized one day that it would be the most fulfilling job to be able to work with dogs everyday. And that place I’d been dreaming of being able to take Reggie? I could build it.” Bryson and his sister Brittany Berryman opened the doors of Bark City in September of 2015, and since, they have become the OC’s specialists in cage-free day-care and boarding.

“We are a family run business that treats each dog like it is part of our family,” says Brittany. “This is a business based entirely on trust: we’re taking care of people’s four-legged kids here!” Michelle and her brother adore their clients, and their client’s humans, too.

Building a staff that is detailed, kind, and work hard to create an environment steeped in community is at the forefront of Bark City’s ethos. “Most of our customers are referrals – people tell their family, friends, co-workers. Without the support of our customers, there would be no Bark City.” Each dog is put through a temperament test prior to daycare and boarding, and all dogs must be up to date on vaccinations, spayed or neutered, on a flea regimen. And all employees are pet-safety and CPR certified. “Our mission is to create happier, healthier dogs by making meaningful connections among owners, dogs, and the the greater canine community.” Did I mention they have couches?
